2008 PRODUCTION - IT'S CARMEN!

Carmen has to be one of the world's most popular operas.  Several of the pieces; the Overture, the Toreador Song and the Habanera to name just three have become so popular as to take on almost a separate life of their own.

The story is set in Seville, around 1830.  Carmen, a beautiful gypsy girl with a fiery temper and free with her love woos Don Jose, an inexperienced and naive soldier.  Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, a peasant girl named Michaela.  He thenn commits mutiny against his superiors and rejects his former life.  But by this time Carmen has become bored with him and turned her affections towards a bullfighter named Escamillo.  Don Jose then descends into madness and ultimately, stricken with jealousy, he murders Carmen.

The first performance of Carmen in 1870 was a turning point in operatic history; one of those decisive moments after which nothing is quite the same again.  Now come and see just why this opera has become a major masterpeice which has conquered the world.
